Decided to remove the masking from the stained maple and pore fill that also. However I used my finger to rub it in. First with the grain, then circles and finally against the grain. I used moderate pressure. Worked in small sections. A quarter of the top at a time. Immediately wiped across the grain with a dry cloth using moderate pressure. After it started to haze a used a moist rag across the grain to remove any excess and bring the color back to the wood. Kept a water spray bottle to rewet the cloth. Make sure to use clean sections of the wet cloth.
Worked pretty well. I won't mask anything in the future. I'll let this dry.
