Sanded maple with 220 grit. Taped off areas I don't want to stain. Use pin stripe tape to follow the contours. I let the head plate maple edges exposed for stain, but it bled through to the mahogany. So I sanded it off. Next time I'll tape the edges.
Mixed water and black stain dust. Strained through coffee filter. Applied thin layer of black stain with cloth. Then sanded back with 320 grit.
Mixed blue stain and strained. Rubbed on one coat.
