Scuffed the entire instrument with gray scotchbrite. Masked the stained maple top and head plate. Maple doesn't need to be grain filled.
Used Timbermate grain filler. Rubbed it into the pores with a cloth. By the time I had the back done, it was dry. So I used a damp cloth to remove the excess from the surface rubbing across the grain. Then did the same to one side. Then the other. And finally the neck.
